Your local shop
Retailers are required by law to take WEEE from customers free of charge. Here's how it works:
- Take back is on a one-for-one basis only.
- The appliance being returned must be of a similar type or have performed the same function as the new item being bought. E.g. the shop is not obliged to accept a fridge when the customer has only bought a toaster.
- Where goods are bought over the counter, retailers must take back the old product in-store either at the time of sale or within a maximum of 15 days from the date of sale.
- For Large household items that require delivery, the retailer must take back the old appliance free of charge, and must give at least 24 hours notice of delivery - we recommend 48 hours in the case of appliances that need to be defrosted.
- The retailer must also accept the old large household item at their premises within a maximum of 30 days from the date of delivery of the new item.
Retailers are also required by law to take Batteries and Accumulators from customers free of charge. This time:
- Take back does not require any purchase from the store.
- The batteries being returned must be of a similar type to those available to buy in the store.
Retailers are also obliged to give consumers information on WEEE and/or battery take-back options. Keep a look out for posters, leaflets, information on your till receipts etc.
Remember: Whichever take-back option you choose, it will be free of charge!
